In last week’s newsletter, we featured a slew of cold noodles out at the Big Three Conbini. FamilyMart is keeping its foot on the gas peddle with a new Cold Noodle campaign. Over three weeks they’ll release a cold soba, ramen, and udon. What a way to get ready for summer.
It looks stunning.
Item of the Week
FamilyMart is launching ‘Koro Jaga’, which appears to be a cross between a french fry and tater tot. Seasoned with a ‘herb salt’ made of parsley, rosemary, oregano, and basil, these will undoubtedly be good.
The shape of the box looks strikingly similar to FamilyMart’s ‘Poke-chiki’ their Karaage-kun competitor, which appears to have stalled. Perhaps they’ve repurposed the packaging for this more promising venture into chunky fried potatoes.
Pudding Takes New Shapes
New Days has smartly stuffed pudding inside of a crepe. 7-11 has turned it into an ice cream bar. And Ministop has made it into a parfait. Gun to my head, I’d go with the parfait. But let’s face it — all pudding is good pudding.
Matcha at Lawson
Lawson is painting sweets in matcha this week. As usual, they look fit for the dessert course at the French Laundry.
Each would go well with a hot tea. I’d more likely enjoy them all at once after two Strong Zeroes.
We Can Now Drink Pino
7-11 is releasing a drinkable Pino in ‘Addictive Almond’ flavor. The only thing I’d crush faster than this beverage is an actual box of Pino. And 7-11’s on top of that.
FamilyMart Sweets
Lawson’s Uchi Café sweets are unquestionably the best among the Big Three. But I get the sense that FamilyMart is upping its game. This ‘Cream Cream Cheese Cake’ features cream cheese from Denmark and whipped cream made with cream from Hokkaido. I am not sure if it comes dusted with nuts. Let’s hope it does.
FamilyMart is also releasing a cat-shaped cheesecake.
From the Dumpster
7-11 is launching a mushroom and bacon sandwich with three types of mushrooms: maitake, eringi, and shimeji. It comes on multi-grain bread.
That wraps up this week’s newsletter. Keep in touch with all your conbini needs through:
